Joining the Pack

This post is long overdue, but time has just flown by and once Harmony got sick, that was pretty all-consuming. Though we’ve adopted and owned many greyhounds, we’ve really never gone to “pick one out.” Like many folks, our hounds tend to come to us via this way and that…a littermate, a special needs or special situation, a special request from an adoption group…hounds that we just stumble upon that need us or need our home. But to actually go to a kennel with no particular hound in mind, is something neither Ken or I have done since our first greyhounds.

So, a couple days after Christmas, we met our good friend Heather at Birmingham Race Course. Heather and Kevin were closing down their racing kennel in Birmingham (booooo!) so we were going to help her profile some dogs, pick some up for an adoption group in SC and see if there were any hounds we wanted to bring home. To start, we had fun losing some $ on the races <yeesh!> and then headed to the kennel compound. Of course, we fell in love with ALL of them, but there was one that we just meshed with right away (actually, two….but that’s a story for another day ;) )

It was tough to pick just one, but we excitedly welcomed into our pack Da Big Guy - now known as Primo. He’s actually the 1/2 brother to both of our racing pups. On his mom’s side to our first dog and on his dad’s side with our second…so that’s pretty cool. He’s a big ol’ goofy, loveable and gorgeous black boy, dressed to impressed in his tux. It was love at first site for Ken and he’s exactly the temperament we wanted to bring into the pack right now.

At the track:

Here he the first morning home with Echo (yellow muzzle). Echo loves to meet and race around the yard with visiting track pups so she helped me with first turnout that day…and met her new packmate!

He has blended in really well with everyone. He’s still pretty submissive and coming out of his shell. I’m really looking forward to seeing what he can do on the lure coursing field soon!
