We finally heard back from the vet with test results from Cornell. Unfortunately, they can only tell us what he didn’t die from. It wasn’t Canine Influenza. It wasn’t poison. It wasn’t a trauma or injury. It wasn’t a tick disease. The only thing we know for sure is that his white blood cell count was super, duper low and that his kidney & liver values indicated the possiblity of some long term underlying disease (though they believe this to be completely unrelated to his death).

As we welcome two new hounds into our family this weekend, we still mourn the untimely and tragic loss of sweet Bodhi. To have no answers makes it almost unbearable to think about.

I can not believe I am posting this. I left for a weekend of lure coursing in Atlanta on Saturday morning…everyone and everthing was fine until this morning, Ken called me at 8am to say that Bodhi was having difficulty breathing and his gums were pale. His back was a little hunched…my first thought was bloat, but he hadn’t eaten since dinner the night before and had gone out on first turnout and seemed fine. I asked if I should come home and Ken said no, not yet. I think we both just thought he was going to have a big gas bubble or something. I mean, he hadn’t skipped any meals and this was a dog that was perky and bouncing around Petsmart last Thursday. Friday night he was roaching like nobody’s business. No sign of being off or sick.

The rest of the day is kind of a blur…Ken called to say the vet was concerned but still not sure what was going on. They had him stable and were giving oxygen and letting him calm down so they could take more xrays. The first round were concerning, as his bronchials looked whiter than they should be. But, his heart looked good and no blockage in the trachea. Then Ken texted me to come home immediately. I called him as I was loading up the van and he told me the vet had just downgraded Bodhi to “grave” – his white blood cell count was bottomed out and he was coughing up blood. Bodhi passed away while peacefully sedated at the vets.

Bloodwork and nasal swabs are being sent to Cornell for diagnotics. The only diagnosis we have now is “undetermined respiratory condition.”

To say we are in shock is an understatement. Thank God for Ken and my good friend Heather who is the only thing that kept me sane on the drive from Atlanta to SC. The vet was wonderful and must have spent at least an hour just talking with us and answering a bazillion questions. Coming off the loss of Harmony, neither of us are prepared for this. I just don’t know how in the hell this happened. I pray Cornell can provide us an answer because young, healthy dogs are not supposed to die like this. And since it was a respiratory condition, we are obviously concerned for the rest of the pack as well. Though no one has shown any symptoms – not even Tater who came from the same racing kennel as Bodhi. This vet is knowledgeable about what makes greyhounds different and what their little quirks and concerns can be coming out of a racing career….

Please help us remember our Bodhi – the sweetest hound that was taken too soon. I’m thankful to have gotten to know him over the last couple months and that he was able to spend a week in a loving home, being spoiled. I have no doubt that he loved every second of being here…it was obvious in the way he lapped the yard, roached when he napped, nuzzled us for lubs and shredded the stuffies. I am honored to have known him.

Godspeed, sweet Bodhi…we loved you from the first moment we met you. Our time together was too short, but our love for you is without end.

I just don’t understand this at all

Yes, you read that right. Last weekend we welcomed home not one, but TWO fabulous newly retired racers. We actually went to Birmingham just to pick up Wildcat Bob, who we “preadopted” back in December when we brought Primo home. Though Fishdog Kennels was closing at Birmingham, some of the dogs in the kennel still had some racin’ to do, so their owners moved them to other kennels at the track. Wildcat Bob went to Toomanyhounds Kennel where he bounced around grades D and E for a couple months before his trainer finally decided to retire him. I wish he could have have done a bit better for his new kennel, but I am glad he’s finally home and that they took such fabulous care of him!

Ken chose his pet name: Bodhi Dogma (Bodhi is short for bodhisattva - Ken is Buddhist, for those who may not know)…here’s a pic our beautiful boy on the way home from the track:

While we were chatting with the kennel helpers about Bodhi and greyhounds and racing in general, I asked about a hound I’d visited often at Fishdog Kennels that has also moved over to Toomanyhounds. I knew Rights to Riches had been retired recently and I was just curious about how she was doing. They asked if I wanted to see her…and I said of course! I figured it might be the last chance I had to see her before she went to an adoption group in Tennessee. So, we went to the overflow kennel and they pulled her adorable overbite-having, buck toothed, wiggly-butt self out of the crate and my heart just about burst into a million bazillion pieces. I just had to bring her home. I just HAD to!!

So, we did While mulling over a name for her on the ride hom, a bit from Ron White came on the XM comedy channel we were listening to and it hit me: TATER! Yep, our new girl was definitely a Tater if I ever saw one. LOL (If you happen to not be familiar with Ron “Tater Salad” White, you are missing out on a hilarious comedian…and a Texan, Ken never forgets to add!)

We did it…We caught The Tater!

After a really long day (8 hours round trip driving for us)…we’re almost home and stop to get gas

Many thanks to Heather with Team Greyhound/Fishdog Kennels who gave us the opportunity to meet Wildcat Bob and Rights to Riches. And lots of thanks also to Melony Cleveland, the owner and trainer of Toomanyhounds kennel in Birmingham, for taking such fantastic care of our pups while they were racing. The dogs were absolutely gorgeous, clean and happy when we picked them up. It’s always great to work with wonderful racing folks at the track!

After a heartfelt talk with her doctor, we decided it was time to let Harmony be at peace. She fought bravely and with all she had, but her body was just not strong enough to beat whatever was making her sick. After 5 days of treatment, Harmony was not making any new red blood cells and she was shredding any that were transfused to her. Today, her tail stopped wagging and we all agreed that a third transfusion would just be delaying the inevitable. They will be some post-mortem tests to try to figure out what took our baby. Hopefully we will get some answers…if for no other reason then to help them help the next dog that comes in with symptoms like hers. I will post a follow up if we get any definitive answers. Thank you all so much for all the support and prayers over the last week. We will post a rememberance thread when we are able. I think Ken and I are still numb and in disbelief that Harmony won’t be coming home

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….

Evening update: Ken just spoke with Dr. Presley who confirmed what the on call vet told us earlier tonight…Harmony’s PCV value has held steady at 20-21% all day, which means she hasn’t shredded through the red blood cells from her second transfusion, like she did with the first. So, while she hasn’t improved per se, she hasn’t gotten any worse. And I’m counting that as GOOD news through tears of joy. They are prepared to give her a third transfusion, but she hasn’t needed it. Please God, let Harmony have turned the corner…let her start to improve!

She hasn’t wanted to eat, but the poor girl has been through so much and she’s on so much medication. She’s still wagging that tail.

So, we all hold our breaths and pray she stays steady through the night. The question now is whether or not they do a third transfusion to try to kick start her body’s system and whether or not they continue the prednisone. Dr. Presley is still thinking about the best way to proceed…and of course, we will hopefully have the tick results from NC State very soon. For right now, we are are cautiously optimistic….

Morning update: The on-call doctor just called. The fluid in Harmony’s belly has been re-absorbed, which is good. However, her PCV has dropped to 21% this morning from 24% last night after her transfusion (normal for greyhounds is 55-65). She’s also a little bit more jaundiced today, as her bilirubin is up. Her kidney values have gone up, probably either because she’s slightly dehydrated (they’ve increased fluids) or the treatments are just taking their toll on her kidneys. But, her spirits are still up and she trotted out for her morning potty break.

The doctor said she anticipates Harmony will need another (third) transfusion today, but they will monitor her bloodwork and call if they feel they need to do a transfusion. A third transfusion will give the meds another day to start turning things around for her.

In a nutshell: Harmony seems to be continuing to decline despite everyone’s best efforts. Her body is just shredding through any red blood cells in her body.

What a crazy day. I headed to Birmingham for an 8 hour round trip drive to pick up four retired racers for adoption and Ken stayed behind to hold down the fort and handle calls from the vet. We debated cancelling the trip, but decided it was important to go. To help four dogs retire and take that first step to finding a forever home honors Harmony’s spirit and all of those volunteers who sacrificed things in their own lives to help Harmony find her way from the track to Ken’s heart and home.

After her first blood transfusion, Harmony developed a fever and mild jaundice. By the afternoon, the on-call vet called to report that her PCV had dropped from 24% to 16%. Harmony’s body had shredded all those red blood cells from the transfusion. Dr. Presley called to ask Ken if we wanted to move forward with an Imidocarb injection. Imidocarb is used to treat babesia, and the side effects can be pretty nasty – up to, and including, sudden death. So, it’s not a treatment you want to give unless you are sure you are dealing with babesia. With her not responding to other treatments, Ken and I felt we had no other good options to help her. If we wait for the tick panel results from NC State next week, we might be too far behind the curve for Imidocarb to help Harmony…if she was even still with us when the results came in.

With the approval from us to give the Imidocarb, Dr. Presley started calling around to local vets to find it. No one had it. He called the University of Georgia vet school and they refused to dispense it to him. So…he called Auburn University, where he did his Residency and still has connections. They said they had it and could FedEx it to him. Dr. Presley, knowing we didn’t have time to wait for FedEx, amazingly decided to drive the 8 hour round trip to Auburn to pick the meds up himself (even though I was in Alabama, they would not dispense it to me). Needless to say, Ken and I are completely blown away and overwhelmed at Dr. Presley’s dedication to Harmony. I just don’t even have words to express my appreciation for a vet who would spend his weekend day off driving to pick up medicine for our dog. If there is a Vet of the Year Award, I want to nominate Dr. Presley. He truly is Harmony’s guardian angel. We also owe a a huge thank you to Auburn University vet school for donating the Imidocarb, since Harmony is a retired racer.

They started her blood transfusion at 3pm and it was projected to take about 6 hours. Just enough time for me to get home, unload the track dogs and head to the hospital with Ken. We were able to see Harmony after the transfusion and she looked really good (all things considered, she looked great!). A testament not only to her spirit, but also to the wonderful care she has been receiving from Upstate Vet Specialists. We waited until she had received her Imidocarb injection to make sure she survived the procedure, and once she was stable we headed home for the night.

A long day, filled with difficult decisions. Witness to amazing dedication from her veterinary team. Amazing support and prayers from my online GreyTalk family. And finally ending with hope that she just might pull through this. No one is giving up on her while her tail is still wagging and she’s telling us she still wants to fight.

Update: Dr. Vilar from OSU and Dr. Presley (Harmony’s local vet) spoke and they are both having a hard time reconciling her symptoms with anything specific. OSU just removed the spleen from a greyhound who had similar symptoms, but it turns out their cases diverge because Harmony’s spleen isn’t really that enlarged. The other dog’s spleen was the biggest Dr. Vilar had seen. I think Dr. Couto may be calling tonight or tomorrow to talk to Dr. Presley (or the on call doctor) in more detail to compare/contrast details of the cases). Right now Harmony’s tentative diagnosis is IMHA (Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia) with vasculitis. Basically, her body is shredding her own blood cells, which is causing the anemia and her blood vessels are inflamed, which is causing her to lose protein. So far, this is the only diagnosis that makes all the pieces fit together.

We visited Harmony and her doctor tonight. He’s a really, really great guy and I couldn’t ask for a more motivated or dedicated vet to be taking care of her. He’s taking her case very personally…Harmony has a way of wrapping men around her velvet paw. Harmony looks…very sick. Dramatically different from yesterday. But she still wagged her stubby tail when she saw her daddy. Her PCV has dropped to 16% and they were starting a blood transfusion as we left tonight. The next 24 hours will be very important. She’s starting to get a little fluid in her abdomen…another concern.

Just when I think I can’t cry anymore, I do.

Original Post: I’ve decided to just start doing a daily update and edit an entry to add updates as the day goes on rather than write brand new entries for every update we here. A lot has happened today and, at the same time, not a lot has happened.

Harmony’s PCV value dropped to 20% this morning. She also vomited, which may just be due to all the meds. They are adding another immunosuppressant to try to stop her body from killing RBCs and changing her antibiotic to a stronger for one on the TBD side of things. They are looking at her ultrasound again just to make sure they haven’t missed anything, but are still at a loss as to why she’s so sick. Dr. Presley said she is holding up pretty well, though you can tell she’s not feeling as well today as she was yesterday.

At the urging of my friends on GT and a fellow greyhound owner going through a similar situation with her pup, I contacted (email and called) OSU to see about a consult. Dr. Paulo Vilar called me back very quickly and asked me a list of questions. He said to have the vet fax Harmony’s info over to them and they will call me back later with more information or our local vet can call them up for a consult. The greyhound community is incredibly lucky to have the Greyhound Wellness Program at OSU as a resource.

Right now we are in a holding pattern waiting to hear from either Dr. Presley at Upstate or Dr. Vilar at OSU. Keep those prayers coming! I can’t tell you how much I appreciate all the emails, pms and calls of support from our friends. Greyhound people truly are the best in the world!

Ken and I were able to spend a little time with Harmony today. She was very happy to see us, but still looking very tired. It didn’t take long for her to become completely exhausted. Her gums are still pale, but she wags her stubby tail when she sees her mom and dad.

The vet had the Pathology report back from Antech Diagnostics…basically, she’s not making any new red blood cells and she’s not killing off any either. At this point, he’s really stumped (he’s board certified in Internal Medicine so he’s trained to handle weird or complex cases). Unfortunately, the doctor doesn’t have a lot of answers for us at the moment. With the protein loss, he’s leaning away from IMHA.

If she’s still stable, she will probably come home tomorrow where it becomes a game of wait and see. The next step would be a spleen biopsy.

Here are some pics from our visit today…

She’s a daddy’s girl!

She tired really quickly…

Dr. Presley called this morning and reported that Harmony ate a little bit, but not much. She seems to be enjoying the belly rubs from the staff, but you can tell she’s not feeling well. Her PCV is 28%, so it’s holding steady from last night when it was 27%. Her protein is low, so they’re trying to figure out why she’s losing protein. They’ll get a first-pee catch this morning. Her platelets are low, but not totally in the toilet. He’s still treating for IMHA (Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia) and TBD, but because of the protein loss he’s not sure that’s really what it is.

We’ve set up a visitation appointment for 1pm today. We are holding out hope that she will start getting better. I’m just numb that she’s going through this. It feels so unreal to have one of our young hounds become ill out of the blue.

OK, I’m finally home and have the dogs and the humans fed. What a long day! Spent quite a bit of time with the internal medicine doc. He’s a new one for us – though we’ve worked with several of the doctors at Upstate and they have an excellent staff there. I really liked him and he was very knowledgeable about greyhounds, tick disease and even discussed my concerns with prednisone, since some greyhounds do not tolerate it at all (Grandpa was one of those dogs).

She’s on supportive care for the anemia while the docs try to figure out what is causing the anemia. The options are:
1) Tick Disease. The blood has been sent off to NC State and they’ve begun treatment as a ‘just in case.’
2) Cancer or other internal disease process. She had a chest and abdominal xray as well as ultrasound, and while her spleen looks slightly enlarged and a bit angry, the doc does not believe we are looking at cancer
3) Auto-Immune. This would be the least desirable, as treatment can be tricky and dogs can be unresponsive to it. The vet gave her a 50/50 chance of survival if this is the ultimate diagnosis.

I can’t believe I’m actually hoping for a TBD, but of the three options it’s probably the most treatable. Harmony is staying at the vet tonight and they should have the report from the pathologist at NC State tomorrow…the tick panel will take a bit longer. She may come home depending on how she’s responding to treatment and the outcome of more bloodwork and the pathology report.

I think I’m still stunned that Harmony is this sick. She seemed off, but not super ill. Being a young dog (7th birthday coming up in Feb), you just don’t expect this kind of serious illness. I really thought she was just a little backed up or her bloodwork would come back normal and she just a little bug or something.
