Along came a girl who stole and broke my heart. And for all the riches of the world I wouldn’t change any part.

When Erin joined our pack she wasn’t our first foray into seniors, she wasn’t even the oldest member of the pack. Despite coming to us with only one tooth and a hole in her gums, Erin wasn’t the worst health case we had taken in. And though Erin couldn’t master going down stairs and sometimes sprawled when going up stairs, she wasn’t our first hound to have problems with stairs.

But when we made the mistake of turning our backs on our unmuzzled pack in the backyard – Erin was the first to earn the title of Pack Fight Victim. And she was the first to earn the title of Pack Fight Victor. Even at 12 years old, Erin was a fighter who was determined to make a full recovery. And that is just what she did!

And yet for all of the things that Erin was and was not, her own indifference was clear. Not indifference to life or to other pack members, though. Erin’s indifference was to the concerns of seniority, and to pack behavior, and to every type of pain. She was beautiful that way.

Some greyhounds will come into your life and affect you like Erin did us. And I challenge you, dear reader, to find words that can explain it. How do you express a love for a greyhound that makes you lose all self-control and openly weep with joy just by looking at you? How do express a gratitude for a girl that teaches you what strength really is? How do you express your understanding of life because of a greyhound’s death?

You cry. And you smile. And you laugh. And then you cry some more. And all the while all you can think is “Thank you, Divine One, for giving me even one moment with this precious angel.”

Along came a girl who stole and broke my heart.

And for all the riches of the world I wouldn’t change any part.

After Ken and I decided we were going apply to adopt Champ, I took some time to check out the other available hounds at Greyhound Crossroads. All day at work, my mind and web browser kept going back to one hound. An adorable 12 year old retired brood mama named Erin. When I got home and my mind and web browser still kept going back to Erin, I asked Ken if he thought Greyhound Crossroads would let us adopt two at the same time. Having as huge a spot in his heart for the old greyladies as I do, he smiled and said “Find out!”

Erin raced under the name Andelisa, which was a combination of her racing owners’ children’s names – Andy and Lisa. Erin, her call name, was the name of their third child. After Erin’s racing days at Jefferson County Kennel Club, she was retired to be a mamma dog. Erin whelped three litters and some of her pups have even been adopted out through Greyhound Crossroads!

Erin was a very beloved hound at the farm (and I totally understand why). She was so loved, that even after the farm closed and most of the other dogs were moved, they just couldn’t bear to part with Erin. The director of Greyhound Crossroads, Kim, had fallen in love with Erin over the years she visited the farm, and begged for Erin to be released into adoption. Finally, Erin’s owners agreed to let Erin find a family of her own….and that lucky family was Ken and me.

We feel so honored to share our lives with Erin. She truly embodies the spirit of the greyhound! Strong willed, determined and incredibly goofy! She has one tooth left in her head, yet still eats with gusto and is convinced she can still gut a stuffie. She still loves to run. She can’t quite get up to the speed of her youth, but she sure tries. And Erin loves her humans. Her favorite “activity” is to collect her stuffie babies, curl up on a bed and have you ear-scritch her to sleep.
